Travels

Mexico City

We flew into CDMX with some of our best friends, excited to experience the city together and go to the F1 Grand Prix.

The energy was high as we arrived to our large AirBnb that functioned more like a boutique hotel with us as it’s only guests.

We kicked off our trip with dinner at Pujol, enjoying the incredible food while sipping mezcal. The experience is one I’ll never forget—like I was experiencing the work of a true artist. Everything from the ingredients to the service was thoughtful and considered.

For the next few days, we explored Condesa and Roma, riding bikes through the city and eating tacos and churros along the way.

Our group of 15 would split up according to interest and regroup for drinks at night. Many trips to the grocery store were made to stock up on snacks, water and Electrolit to nurse our hangovers.

A portion of our group made the trek to the Grand Prix on the weekend and enjoyed a wild and fun race.

As our friends headed back to LA, Ryan and I stayed for a couple more days to enjoy the city some more (and to do some work).

Fun and spirited, CDMX is a wonderful mix of old and new, lush nature and bright night life, and it makes a great short trip from LA!

STAY

  • Where to stay: we stayed in Condesa and that was great. We also really like Roma. Both would be walkable or bikeable to a lot.

  • AirBnb - We found this amazing AirBnb that is basically a small hotel. It has 6 private rooms (5 doubles, 1 triple) that share a common courtyard space. When I found this place, we decided to invite some friends and we ended up having a group of 15!

  • Hotel Condesa DF - This hotel came highly recommended and I wasn’t very impressed. It was fine and the interior atrium was really pretty, but the best part was its location.

  • Ignacia Guest House - this place looks beautiful. I’d definitely stay here next time.

FOOD

  • Pujol - I don’t even know how to describe how much I loved dinner at Pujol. The best I can do is say that it’s like you’re experiencing and artists creation. The space is beautiful, the food is delicious, and the service is incredible. And the per person price is way less than an equivalent meal in LA. I can’t recommend this enough! Make sure you make reservations early!

  • Salon Rios - Good food, decent drinks, fun vibe.

  • Meroma - really good food & wine in a beautifully designed space. Might be better during the day as the ceiling is transparent and lets lots of natural light in.

  • Chico Julio - little restaurant serving seafood

  • Ojo de Agua - healthy spot with juices, smoothies, bowls, salads, snacks, and plenty of options. Nice to have some greens after a night of eating tacos. Multiple locations

  • Molino el Pujol - from the chef of Pujol, this small spot serves up breakfast tamales. Good for a quick stop or pick up in the morning.

  • Huset - garden-like interior a decent menu

  • Rosetta - housed in a large mansion, the menu innovative using Mexican ingredients. Not as impressive as I expected, but it was good.

  • Panderia Rosetta - delicious pastries...get the guava pastry if you’re craving something sweet.

  • Mercado Roma - Food hall, a la grand central market but smaller.

  • Churros el Morro - Tasty churros in fun spaces. Multiple locations.

  • Lardo

  • Contramar

  • Niddo

  • Masala y Maiz

  • Por Siempre Vegana

  • Fonda Fina

COFFEE & TEA

  • Dosis Café - Spacious, industrial coffee shop with wifi. A good spot if you need to get some work done.

  • Cucurucho - Coffee roaster and cafe that serves pour overs and is delicious!

  • Chiquitito Café - Tiny cafe serving up tasty coffee in Condesa

  • Barola Cafe

DRINKS

  • Hanky Panky - speakeasy bar that is actually a little tricky (but fun) to find. Good cocktails.

  • Gin Gin - average cocktails in a large and cool space. Great for a group!

  • Licorería Limantour - wonderfully creative (and kind of weird) drinks.

  • Baltra Bar

  • La Clandestina

  • Bar Romelia

  • Bosforo

  • Mundana

ACTIVITIES

  • Parks - there are parks sprinkled throughout the city as well as lush walkways and running paths. Enjoy the greenery on a walk around the neighborhood.

  • Formula 1 Mexican Grand Prix - The main driver for our trip was to go to the F1 Mexican GP. It was a really fun race because the fans really show up and get excited. The track is fairly easy to navigate, but your ticket only gets you access to your section and you cant leave your section and go to another section. There are lots of food vendors inside (and even some salad options) but be prepared to wait in line. You’re best bet for getting a beer is from the guys selling them in the stands. We took Ubers to the race and although traffic was bad I still think it’s the best way. The subway trains coming in seemed really packed and Ubers are so cheap that it’s totally worth it. Just prepared for an hour drive or more.

TRAVEL

  • From the airport - We found it easiest to get an Uber from the airport. We did have to wait in a pretty long line to get through customs when we landed, so be prepared for that.

  • Jump Bikes - There were Jump bikes pretty readily available in the area of the city that we stayed. While traffic can be bad, they do have some bike lanes and you can also find smaller side streets instead of the large busier streets.

  • Uber - Ubers in the city are SUPER cheap. We took a long ride outside the city (almost an hour) and it cost $20. So shorter rides in the city are really reasonable.

Bold - Highly Recommend

Bold Italics - Haven’t personally experienced but comes highly recommended and looks amazing.
